Although NFM poses a serious problem, it remains a neglected pest of poultry in China and other Asian countries. The northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is regarded as the primary and most serious ectoparasite of poultry in North America (Axtell and Arends, 1990).Mites and lice are the most destructive external parasites of poultry flocks (Goddard and Edwards, 2010). The posterior end tapers acutely in Ornithonyssus sylviarum but more evenly in Ornithonyssus bursa. There are three pairs of setae on the sternal plate in Ornithonyssus bursa and only two pairs in Ornithonyssus sylviarum.
Haematophagous mites were collected from the vent region and plumage of chickens in six hobby flocks of ornamental breeds in Sweden, one of which included turkeys. Soiled vent skin and feathers, dermatitis, hyperkeratosis, skin necroses and ulcers were observed in 12 necropsied birds from two of the flocks. The mites were identified as the northern fowl mite Ornithonyssus sylviarum Northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago, 1877), infestations can stress birds, impairing welfare and causing substantial economic losses. A study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of an ectoparasiticide solution (fluralaner) for oral administration in the treatment of mite-infested hens.
